Frequently Asked Questions

What is a differential and what does it do?

A differential is a gearbox located at each drive axle that allows your wheels to rotate at different speeds — critical when turning corners. It transfers engine torque to the wheels while accommodating the different distances each wheel travels. When a differential wears out, fails, or needs upgrading for off-road use, Colorado Axle and Gear specializes in complete differential repair, rebuild, and regear services.

Can you regear a Jeep Wrangler?

Yes — Jeep Wrangler regearing is one of our most common jobs. When you lift a Wrangler and install larger tires, the factory gear ratios become inefficient, hurting performance and fuel economy. We swap in new ring and pinion gears to match your tire size and driving needs. We work on all Wrangler generations including TJ, JK, and JL models, and we carry Dana, Yukon Gear, and Revolution Gear & Axle ratio options.

How long does a regear take?

A standard front and rear regear on a Jeep or truck typically takes 1–2 business days once parts are in. Turnaround depends on parts availability, the number of axles being geared, and whether any additional work like bearing replacement or locker installation is done at the same time. We provide an accurate timeline estimate at no charge when you drop off your vehicle.

Do you offer a warranty on your work?

Yes, we stand behind our repairs. We offer a warranty on parts and labor for our differential and axle work. Specific warranty terms vary by job type and parts used — ask us at drop-off and we will explain exactly what is covered. Our referral rate of over 80 percent speaks to the confidence our customers have in our work quality.

What is the difference between an open differential, a limited-slip, and a locker?

An open differential sends power to the wheel with the least resistance — fine for normal road driving but problematic off-road. A limited-slip differential (Posi-Traction) partially locks under load, improving traction without sacrificing drivability. A locking differential fully locks both wheels to spin together, maximizing off-road traction. We install all three types, including ARB air lockers, Detroit Locker, Eaton units, and Spicer Trac-Lok limited slips.

How do I know if my differential needs to be repaired or rebuilt?

Common warning signs include: a whining or howling noise from the axle area that changes with speed, a grinding or clunking sound when accelerating or turning, differential fluid leaks (typically a brownish fluid near the axle), vibration at highway speed, or a burning smell after off-road use. If you hear any of these, bring your vehicle in for our free diagnosis. The sooner a differential problem is caught, the less expensive the repair.

Do you work on all makes and models, or just Jeeps and trucks?

We work on all makes and models including Jeep Wrangler, Toyota Tacoma, Toyota 4Runner, RAM trucks, Ford F-Series, GM trucks and SUVs, and many others. We also service fleet vehicles and commercial trucks. If you have a vehicle with an axle or differential problem, give us a call and we will let you know if it falls within our specialty.

Where are you located and what are your hours?

We are located at 2611 W. 64th Ave Suite A, Denver, CO 80221. Our hours are Monday through Friday, 8AM to 5PM. We serve customers throughout the Denver metro area and all of Colorado — clients come to us from Westminster, Arvada, Lakewood, Aurora, Boulder, Fort Collins, and beyond. Call us at (303) 286-0338 to schedule a drop-off or ask about your vehicle.

Do you offer a free diagnosis?

Yes. We provide free, honest diagnoses on axle and differential issues. Bring your vehicle in and we will inspect it, identify the problem, and give you a clear, upfront estimate — no hidden costs or surprise fees. You can then decide how to proceed. We believe an informed customer makes the best decisions for their vehicle.

What gear ratio should I run with 35-inch tires on my truck?

For 35-inch tires, most trucks and Jeeps perform best with a 4.56:1 gear ratio when paired with typical automatic transmissions, though the optimal ratio depends on your specific transmission, transfer case, and intended use (daily driving vs. heavy off-road). 37-inch tires typically call for 4.88:1 or even 5.13:1. Bring your vehicle and tires in and we will calculate the optimal gear ratio for your setup and driving style.

What Our Customers Say

Over 80% of our business comes from referrals. Here is why.

★★★★★

“Al and his team regeared my Jeep JL front and rear for 37-inch tires. The difference was night and day — the Jeep actually drives like it should now. Professional, fair price, and the work was done exactly when they said it would be. Highly recommend.”

★★★★★

“I had a bad differential whine on my Tacoma that two other shops could not diagnose correctly. Al identified it immediately — worn pinion bearing. Fixed it the right way at a fair price. This is the only shop I trust with my drivetrain.”

★★★★★

“Our landscaping company runs a fleet of F-250s. Colorado Axle and Gear has been our go-to for axle and differential work for over 10 years. Fast turnaround, honest pricing, and they always explain exactly what failed and why. Excellent operation.”

★★★★★

“Had an ARB locker and full regear done on my 4Runner. Al walked me through the whole process and explained every decision. The truck wheeled perfectly on its first trip to Moab after the work. Worth every penny.”
